Wildlife You might Encounter near Sulphur Mountain

Wildlife Near Sulphur Mountain
Sulphur Mountain rises directly above the Banff townsite and contains several distinct wildlife habitats, from the productive forests and thermal springs around its lower slopes to subalpine forest and exposed alpine terrain near the summit. The lower mountain is also part of an important wildlife movement corridor that allows animals to travel around the Banff townsite.

Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn sheep are one of the most characteristic large mammals around Sulphur Mountain. They favour open grassy slopes near rocky escape terrain and may occasionally appear surprisingly high on the mountain. Parks Canada specifically identifies the top of the Sulphur Mountain Gondola ride as one of the places in Banff where bighorn sheep are commonly seen.

Mountain Goats
Mountain goats inhabit rugged mountainous terrain throughout Banff National Park. Their white coats, beards and short black horns distinguish them from bighorn sheep. They generally favour steeper and more rugged terrain, so sightings around Sulphur Mountain are less predictable than bighorn sheep sightings.

Elk

Wolves

Red Squirrels
Red squirrels are among the smaller mammals visitors may notice in the coniferous forests on the lower and middle portions of Sulphur Mountain. Their loud calls often reveal them before they are actually seen.

Porcupines
North American porcupines occur within Banff National Park and can inhabit forested mountain environments. They are much less conspicuous than squirrels and are generally not something visitors should expect to encounter around the busy summit facilities.

Hoary Marmots
Hoary marmots are associated with rocky alpine and subalpine environments throughout the Canadian Rockies.
